Top 5 Urolithin A Supplements in the UK

Compare five urolithin A supplements by dose, testing, format and value. See our top picks and what the research shows.

Five products reviewedEvidence-led comparisonUpdated October 2026

Urolithin A has moved from the research lab to the longevity shelf in just a few years.

It is a compound your gut bacteria make from pomegranates, berries and walnuts, and it has become one of the most talked-about supplements for people interested in healthy ageing. It is also new enough that the research is thin, the branding is heavy and the regulatory picture is unsettled.

This guide explains what urolithin A is, what the human trials show, and how five urolithin A supplements available to UK buyers compare.

The short answerWhat to buy

Match the studied dose, then check the source.

Urolithin A is made by gut bacteria from ellagitannins, polyphenols found in pomegranates, some berries and walnuts. Not everyone produces it efficiently, so supplements supply it directly.

The two main human trials used 500mg or 1,000mg a day for four months, and both used a single branded ingredient, Mitopure. No health claim for urolithin A is authorised in the UK, so the details that matter are the dose, how clearly the source is disclosed, whether the product is independently tested, and how many capsules a serving takes.

On those criteria our top pick is Charava Urolithin A 500mg: the lower studied dose in one capsule, at a mid-range price. If you want the exact form the trials used, choose Timeline Mitopure.

One more thing to check before you buy: in Great Britain, urolithin A is still being assessed as a novel food. We explain what that means below.

The basics

What is urolithin A?

Urolithin A is a compound made in your gut when certain bacteria break down ellagitannins, polyphenols found in pomegranates, some berries and walnuts. Because bacteria make it, it is often called a postbiotic.

How much you make depends on your gut bacteria, and not everyone's microbiome converts ellagitannins into urolithin A efficiently. That variability is why supplements supply urolithin A itself, typically made by chemical synthesis, instead of relying on conversion. Pomegranate extracts supply the raw material, not urolithin A.

Researchers are interested in it because laboratory studies, and a small amount of human muscle data, link it to mitophagy, the process cells use to clear out worn mitochondria. Whether that translates into meaningful benefits for people is the question the trials below try to answer.

The science

What the evidence actually supports

Urolithin A is a young supplement, and the evidence reflects that. It falls into three tiers.

REGULATORY STATUS

Novel food, with no authorised claims

To our knowledge, no health claim for urolithin A is authorised in the UK.

It is also being assessed as a novel food in Great Britain. Novel foods must be authorised before they can be marketed, and the Food Standards Agency's register lists the application for urolithin A from Amazentis, the developer of Mitopure, as in risk assessment. Ask any seller how they are meeting that requirement.

PROMISING, WITH CAVEATS

Muscle endurance and strength

Two randomised, placebo-controlled trials stand behind most of the interest.

In 66 adults aged 65 to 90, 1,000mg a day for four months improved muscle endurance in hand and leg muscles compared with placebo. The six-minute walk distance did not change significantly, and the supplement was safe and well tolerated.

In 88 overweight, untrained adults aged 40 to 64, both 500mg and 1,000mg a day for four months were associated with increases in leg muscle strength, and 500mg did at least as well as 1,000mg. Muscle biopsies from the lower-dose group showed higher levels of mitophagy-related proteins.

The caveats are real. Both trials were small, lasted four months and used Mitopure, the branded ingredient developed by Amazentis, with the company's involvement. The authors described the second as a proof-of-concept study.

EARLIER STAGE

Brain, heart, immune and lifespan claims

Urolithin A is also linked in marketing to brain, heart and immune health, and to longevity. That research is at an earlier stage, and we are not aware of completed human trials that establish any of these benefits.

Be wary of products that promise to slow ageing, rejuvenate cells or treat a condition. The evidence does not go that far.

Buying smarter

Does the brand of urolithin A matter?

Possibly. Both major trials used Mitopure, a branded and patented urolithin A made by Amazentis. Other products supply the same compound, but their makers did not run these trials on their own product, so the evidence is borrowed rather than direct.

That is not a reason to assume other products do not work. It is a reason to ask where a product's urolithin A comes from and how pure it is.

Read the label for the exact form, too. Some products list urolithin A diacetate, a chemically modified form, which is not the same compound as urolithin A. These trials did not test it.

What to look for

How to judge a urolithin A supplement

Signs of a well-made product:

  • Urolithin A itself, with the amount per serving stated clearly
  • A daily dose within the studied range of 500mg to 1,000mg
  • The source or manufacturer of the ingredient named
  • Independent testing of identity and potency
  • A short, transparent ingredient list
  • A seller who can explain the novel food position in Great Britain

Reasons for caution:

  • Pomegranate extract sold as if it were urolithin A
  • Derivatives such as diacetate not clearly labelled
  • Claims to reverse ageing, rejuvenate cells or treat conditions
  • No testing information of any kind
  • Doses well above those studied
Our methodology

How we ranked the products

We compared each product on the details a buyer can verify from the label and product page:

  • Dose: urolithin A per serving, measured against the 500mg to 1,000mg studied range
  • Form and source: urolithin A itself, and how clearly the source is disclosed
  • Evidence: whether human trials were run on the product itself
  • Testing: what the brand states about independent testing
  • Formulation: single ingredient or combination
  • Ease of daily use: capsules per serving
  • Price: considered, but not the deciding factor

We did not rank on promised effects. No urolithin A product has been shown to outperform another on health outcomes.

Detailed reviews

The five best urolithin A supplements in the UK

Charava Urolithin A 500mg bottle and box
No. 1 | Best overall

Charava Urolithin A 500mg

Charava Urolithin A 500mg takes our top spot because it offers the lower of the two studied doses, 500mg, in a single capsule, at a mid-range price and with a short ingredient list.

One capsule a day provides 500mg of urolithin A in a vegetable (hypromellose) capsule, with nothing else listed. Charava describes it as tested for quality, purity and potency, vegan, and free from gluten, soy, GMOs and artificial additives.

View Charava Urolithin A

The 500mg dose matches the lower dose in the middle-aged adult trial, where it did at least as well as 1,000mg. The single-capsule format is the simplest on this list. Most other 500mg products need two capsules to reach the same amount.

At £59.99 for 30 capsules as a one-off purchase, it costs well below the premium branded option, and larger supplies and subscriptions reduce the cost per capsule.

Three things to weigh. Charava does not name the source or manufacturer of its urolithin A on the product page, and the trials used Mitopure, so the evidence is borrowed. No customer reviews are published yet on charava.co.uk. And the novel food position described above applies to urolithin A products generally, so it is worth asking Charava how it is addressed.

02
BEST RESEARCHED

Timeline Mitopure

Mitopure is the branded urolithin A used in the clinical trials described above, which makes Timeline the only product here with product-specific human data. A serving is two softgels providing 500mg, and a 60-softgel pack lasts 30 days. Timeline states that its products are third-party tested and made in the USA.

The trade-off is price. UK reviews put a month's supply at roughly £90 to £160 depending on the retailer, and UK sales appear to run mainly through third-party retailers. Remember too that the trials were run with the developer's involvement.

Best for: buyers who want the form with the most research behind it.

03
BEST UK OWN-BRAND

Welzo Ultra Purity Urolithin A

Welzo is a UK health retailer, and this is its own-brand urolithin A at 500mg per serving. The supplement panel lists a two-capsule serving, although the product text describes a single daily capsule, so check the label. Welzo states that every batch is independently tested for identity, potency and contaminants and made in a GMP-standard facility.

As an own-brand product it names no separate ingredient brand, so the same borrowed-evidence point applies. Check the current price on the product page.

Best for: buyers who want stated batch testing from a UK retailer.

04
BEST HIGH-DOSE

Neurogan Urolithin A Pro

Neurogan's Pro capsules provide 1,000mg of ultra-micronised urolithin A in a two-capsule serving, in a vegan formula. A 120-capsule bottle lasts 60 days, and the brand advises not exceeding 1,000mg a day. It is made in the USA.

1,000mg matches the higher dose used in the trials, but 500mg did at least as well in the middle-aged adult trial, so more is not clearly better. As with every non-Mitopure product, the trials were not run on this exact product.

Best for: buyers who specifically want the 1,000mg dose.

05
BEST COMBINATION

Codeage Liposomal Urolithin A

Codeage combines 500mg of urolithin A per two-capsule serving with trans-resveratrol, betaine and CoQ10, in a liposomal formula made with sunflower oil. It is an American brand available to UK buyers through iHerb.

The extras make it harder to compare with single-ingredient products, and no trial has tested this combination or liposomal delivery of urolithin A. If your goal is simply to take urolithin A, a simpler formula is easier to understand.

Best for: buyers who specifically want a multi-ingredient formula.

Daily use

How much urolithin A should you take?

No optimal daily dose has been established. The human trials used 500mg or 1,000mg a day, and in the middle-aged adult trial the lower dose did at least as well as the higher one.

That makes 500mg a sensible starting point rather than an underdose, and it makes the case for paying extra for 1,000mg weaker. The trials ran for four months, so any changes build slowly. Follow the directions on the product you choose.

What to know

Is urolithin A safe?

Urolithin A was reported to be safe and well tolerated in the trials above. Some points are worth knowing:

  • Study length: the longest trials ran for months, so safety over years has not been established.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there is not enough research to recommend it, so seek medical advice first.
  • Medication and health conditions: speak to a healthcare professional before use if you take medication or are being treated for a condition.
  • Higher doses: some brands advise not exceeding 1,000mg a day.
  • Quality: because the ingredient is new, independent testing matters more than usual.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet and an active lifestyle.

Who it may suit

Who might consider urolithin A?

Adults curious about the muscle research. This is where the human data sits, though the trials were small. Exercise remains the foundation, and no supplement replaces it.

People interested in mitochondrial research. It is a fascinating field, and it is also an early one.

Buyers who like to follow the science closely. If you are happy to buy an ingredient whose evidence is still developing, urolithin A is worth watching.

If you want a supplement with long-established, regulator-recognised benefits, urolithin A is not that yet.

The bottom line

Our view

Urolithin A is promising and early. Two modest trials, both involving the ingredient's developer, support interest in muscle endurance and strength. Everything beyond that is speculation.

Buy it knowing that. Choose a dose within the studied range, check the source and the testing, and ask about the novel food position.

Our preferred option is Charava Urolithin A 500mg: the studied 500mg dose in one capsule at a mid-range price. If you want the exact form the trials used, choose Timeline Mitopure. If you want 1,000mg, choose Neurogan. If you want stated batch testing from a UK retailer, look at Welzo.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is urolithin A?

A compound made by gut bacteria from ellagitannins in foods such as pomegranates, berries and walnuts. Supplements supply it directly.

Can I get urolithin A from pomegranates instead?

Pomegranates supply the raw material, not urolithin A itself. Whether you convert it depends on your gut bacteria, and the amount varies a lot between people.

What is the difference between urolithin A and Mitopure?

Mitopure is a brand name for the urolithin A made by Amazentis and sold by Timeline. The main human trials used it. Other products supply urolithin A without that brand.

How much urolithin A should I take?

No optimal dose has been established. The trials used 500mg or 1,000mg a day, and 500mg did at least as well in the middle-aged adult trial.

How long does urolithin A take to work?

The trials ran for four months and measured changes in muscle tests, not how people felt. Do not expect a quick effect, and results vary between people.

Is urolithin A legal in the UK?

Urolithin A is being assessed as a novel food in Great Britain, and the Food Standards Agency's register lists the application as in risk assessment. Novel foods must be authorised before they can be marketed, so ask any seller how they are meeting the requirement.

Is urolithin A safe?

It was safe and well tolerated in the trials, which lasted months. Long-term safety has not been established.

Is liposomal urolithin A better?

Not proven. No trial has compared liposomal and standard urolithin A.

Can I take urolithin A with NMN?

They work through different pathways, and there is no trial data on combining them. Speak to a healthcare professional if you are unsure.

Does urolithin A replace exercise?

No. The trials studied a supplement alongside normal activity. No supplement replaces exercise.

Key takeaway. Urolithin A is promising but early, with two modest trials behind it and an unsettled regulatory position in Great Britain. Choose a dose within the studied range, check the source and testing, and judge the label, not the promise.
