Magnesium glycinate is one of the most popular supplements in the UK, and one of the easiest to misread.

The big number on the front of the pack is usually the weight of the compound, not the amount of magnesium. A "500mg" capsule can provide anywhere from about 70mg to 100mg of actual magnesium, depending on what else is in it. Servings range from one capsule to four, and some products add a second magnesium compound without saying much about it.

This guide explains how to read the label, what magnesium can and cannot be said to do, and which product best fits a simple daily routine.

Why people take magnesium

What magnesium can, and cannot, be said to do

Magnesium is an essential mineral. In Great Britain the authorised wording says it contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to electrolyte balance, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal muscle function, to normal protein synthesis, to normal psychological function and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and that it has a role in the process of cell division.

Those claims can be used only on products that supply enough magnesium, at least 15% of the nutrient reference value (56mg) per daily serving. Beyond that wording, claims about sleep quality, anxiety or stress relief are not authorised for magnesium, and the research behind them is thinner than the marketing suggests.

How much you need

UK guidance is 300mg a day for men and 270mg a day for women aged 19 to 64, and most people can get this from a varied diet. Having 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, and high doses can cause diarrhoea.

Sleep: promising, but thin

A 2021 systematic review found three small trials in 151 older adults with insomnia. Pooled results showed people fell asleep about 17 minutes faster on magnesium than on placebo, but the authors judged the evidence to be of low quality and not strong enough for firm recommendations.

Does glycinate absorb better?

Glycinate is often chosen because it is considered gentler on digestion than some other forms. We are not aware of strong head-to-head trials showing it is better absorbed or more effective, so treat "superior absorption" claims with caution.

Not a substitute for advice

If you have kidney problems, take regular medication or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking magnesium supplements. Magnesium can interact with some medicines, including some antibiotics and bisphosphonates.

These points describe magnesium and its research generally. Product rankings do not imply that one brand produces greater health benefits than another.

Know what you are buying

How to read a magnesium glycinate label

Most confusion comes from one thing: the label can list the weight of the compound, the weight of the magnesium, or both. Only the elemental figure tells you how much magnesium you are taking.

Compound weight is not magnesium

Pure magnesium bisglycinate is only around 14% magnesium by weight. A capsule listing 500mg of the compound would normally provide roughly 70mg of magnesium, so a stated figure well above that suggests another magnesium compound has been added.

Glycinate and bisglycinate are the same

Magnesium glycinate and magnesium bisglycinate describe the same compound: one magnesium ion bound to two glycine molecules. The names are used interchangeably on labels.

Look for a second magnesium compound

Some products reach a higher elemental figure by adding magnesium oxide, described as "buffered". That is not necessarily a problem, but oxide is a different form and should be declared in the ingredients.

Count the units per serving

Serving sizes run from one capsule to four. Compare the elemental magnesium per day at the stated serving, and the cost for that amount, rather than the price per bottle.

Buy with confidence

What to look for in a magnesium glycinate supplement

A good magnesium glycinate product should make its elemental dose and ingredients easy to understand. These are the details we prioritise.

01. A stated elemental dose

The label should state the milligrams of magnesium per serving, not only the weight of the compound.

02. A disclosed form

Look for the compound named, and any second form, such as magnesium oxide, declared clearly.

03. A sensible daily amount

Stay within the 400mg a day from supplements that UK guidance treats as unlikely to cause harm, counting every supplement you take.

04. Few other ingredients

Check the capsule material, fillers, bulking agents and anti-caking agents, so you know what else you are taking.

05. Testing and manufacturing information

Look for where the product is made, the standard it is made to, and testing information you can check.

06. Claims that match the evidence

Be wary of products promising better sleep, calm or cardiovascular benefits. Authorised wording is limited, and stronger claims go beyond it.

Before you buy

Four buying mistakes worth avoiding

Reading the front of the pack

"500mg", "1000mg" and "1500mg" usually describe the compound. Turn the bottle over and find the elemental magnesium figure.

Paying a premium for "superior absorption"

There is limited head-to-head evidence that one glycinate product absorbs better than another. Compare elemental dose, ingredients and price per 100mg.

Taking more because it is gentle

Glycinate is often better tolerated, but high doses of any magnesium can cause diarrhoea. Keep supplements to 400mg a day or less unless a clinician advises otherwise.

Expecting a sleep aid

The sleep evidence is small and low quality, and no sleep claim is authorised. Magnesium is a mineral supplement, not a treatment for insomnia.

Charava Magnesium Glycinate bottle
No. 1 | Our best overall pick

Charava Magnesium Glycinate

One vegan capsule a day, with a stated 100mg of elemental magnesium.

Our first choice for adults who want a modest, simple evening top-up from a UK-made, vegan product, rather than a higher-dose or multi-capsule serving.

426 customer reviews on charava.co.uk, 384 of them five stars (90%), as at 20 October 2026. Reviews describe individual experiences.

Reasons to choose it

  • One capsule a day, the simplest routine in this guide.
  • 100mg of elemental magnesium, about 27% of the nutrient reference value, enough to use the authorised claims.
  • A vegetable (hypromellose) capsule, stated to be free from lactose, gluten, soy, GMOs and animal derivatives.
  • UK-made, with testing for purity, according to the brand.
  • 426 customer reviews on the brand's own site, 90% of them five stars.
  • 120 and 180-day supplies reduce the cost per capsule.

Points to consider

  • It supplies less magnesium per serving than the 200mg options, so higher intakes need more capsules.
  • At the time of writing it costs more per 100mg of magnesium than Pure Encapsulations and Bulk, and about the same as Cytoplan.
  • The product page lists 500mg of compound providing 100mg of magnesium and does not say whether another magnesium compound is used, so check the full specification with the seller.
  • The product page makes some claims beyond the authorised wording, which we have not repeated here.

Why it takes our top spot

Charava is the simplest product here to take: one vegan, UK-made capsule a day with a stated elemental dose, a short ingredients line and a large base of customer reviews on its own site. For someone who wants a modest evening top-up, that is a sensible fit.

It is not the strongest or the cheapest. At £14.99 for 60 capsules it costs about £0.25 per 100mg of magnesium, against roughly £0.16 for Pure Encapsulations and £0.10 for Bulk, and it provides half the magnesium per serving of Cytoplan or Viridian.

If you want 200mg a day from a stated oxide-free formula, look at Cytoplan. If you want the lowest cost per milligram, look at Bulk. If you want the simplest one-capsule routine from a UK-made, vegan product, this is our pick.

02
For the best value capsule

Pure Encapsulations Magnesium (Glycinate)

Pure Encapsulations Magnesium (Glycinate) bottle

Strengths

  • 120mg of magnesium per capsule from magnesium glycinate, with a short ingredients list.
  • About £17.76 for 90 capsules at UK retailer Healf at the time of writing.
  • A well-known practitioner brand with wide UK availability.

Considerations

  • Contains ascorbyl palmitate as an antioxidant, which some buyers prefer to avoid.
  • The label allows one to four capsules a day, and four capsules would exceed the 400mg a day UK guidance level.
  • Vegetarian capsule, so not described as vegan.

Our verdict: The best value capsule here. Charava ranks higher in our guide for its single-capsule simplicity and UK manufacture, but Pure Encapsulations costs less per milligram.

03
For an unbuffered 200mg

Cytoplan Magnesium Bisglycinate

Cytoplan Magnesium Bisglycinate bottle

Strengths

  • 200mg of elemental magnesium per two capsules, stated to come from pure magnesium bisglycinate.
  • Described as unbuffered and magnesium oxide-free.
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians, according to the brand.
  • £14.99 for 60 capsules, with 427 reviews on Cytoplan's own site.

Considerations

  • Two capsules a day for the full serving.
  • Roughly the same cost per 100mg as Charava at current prices.
  • Sold by a practitioner-focused brand, so check delivery and stock on its own site.

Our verdict: The strongest option here for buyers who want 200mg a day and a clearly stated oxide-free formula.

04
For a vegan high-potency serving

Viridian High Potency Magnesium Bisglycinate

Viridian High Potency Magnesium Bisglycinate bottle

Strengths

  • 200mg of elemental magnesium per two capsules (1,668mg of magnesium bisglycinate).
  • Described as 100% pure magnesium bisglycinate, with no other magnesium forms.
  • Vegan formulation from an established UK brand.

Considerations

  • About £16.05 for 60 capsules at one UK retailer, which works out dearer per 100mg than most products here.
  • Two capsules a day for the full serving.
  • Viridian has sold several versions of its bisglycinate at different strengths, so check the label you receive.

Our verdict: A sound vegan option at 200mg a day, though it costs more than Cytoplan for the same dose.

05
For the lowest price

Bulk Magnesium Bisglycinate Tablets

Bulk Magnesium Bisglycinate Tablets bottle

Strengths

  • 200mg of magnesium per two tablets, about 53% of the nutrient reference value.
  • £5.99 for 60 tablets at the time of writing (list price £7.99), the lowest cost per milligram here.
  • From a large UK sports nutrition brand with fast delivery.

Considerations

  • Buffered with magnesium oxide, so it is not a pure glycinate formula.
  • Tablets include bulking agents such as microcrystalline cellulose and di-calcium phosphate.
  • The price is a limited autumn offer, so check the current price.

Our verdict: The cheapest way to reach 200mg a day, for buyers who are comfortable with a buffered, tablet formula.

Competitor comparisons refer to the named product or version, not the brand's entire range. Product specifications and availability can change. Missing information does not mean a product is untested or poor quality.

Frequently asked questions

Magnesium glycinate supplements: your questions answered

Clear answers to the questions people ask most about magnesium glycinate supplements in the UK. Last reviewed 20 October 2026.

Magnesium glycinate basics

What is magnesium glycinate?

Magnesium glycinate is a form of magnesium bound to glycine, an amino acid. It is also called magnesium bisglycinate, because each magnesium ion is bound to two glycine molecules.

It is one of several forms used in supplements, alongside citrate, oxide, malate and others.

Is magnesium glycinate the same as magnesium bisglycinate?

Yes. The two names describe the same compound and are used interchangeably on labels.

Bisglycinate is the more precise chemical name, and glycinate is the more common name on the front of a pack.

What is elemental magnesium?

Elemental magnesium is the weight of the magnesium itself, not the weight of the compound it is bound to. It is the figure that tells you how much magnesium you are actually taking.

Pure magnesium bisglycinate is only around 14% magnesium by weight, so a capsule with 500mg of the compound would normally provide roughly 70mg of magnesium.

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate?

They are different compounds. Citrate is bound to citric acid and is often used for its laxative effect at higher doses, while glycinate is generally considered gentler on digestion.

We are not aware of strong head-to-head trials showing that one is clearly better absorbed or more effective than the other.

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide?

Magnesium oxide contains a much higher percentage of magnesium by weight but is generally considered less well absorbed and more likely to loosen stools.

Some glycinate products are "buffered" with oxide to reach a higher elemental figure, which should be declared in the ingredients.

What does magnesium do in the body?

Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal muscle function, normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function, and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

It also contributes to electrolyte balance, normal protein synthesis and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and has a role in cell division.

Choosing a magnesium glycinate supplement

What is the best magnesium glycinate supplement in the UK?

The best choice depends on what matters to you. Our overall pick is Charava Magnesium Glycinate, because it is the simplest to take: one vegan, UK-made capsule a day with a stated 100mg of magnesium. The Longevity Shop is commercially connected to Charava, which you should weigh when reading our rankings.

For an oxide-free 200mg, look at Cytoplan. For the best value capsule, Pure Encapsulations. For the lowest price, Bulk.

What should I look for when buying magnesium glycinate?

Look for a stated elemental magnesium figure, a disclosed form with any added oxide declared, a sensible daily amount, few other ingredients and clear manufacturing and testing information.

Also check how many capsules or tablets make up a serving, because that changes both convenience and cost.

Is a magnesium glycinate buffered with magnesium oxide a problem?

Not necessarily, but it is a different product from a pure glycinate. Oxide raises the elemental magnesium per capsule, and some buyers prefer a single-form product.

What matters is that the label declares it. Cytoplan states that its product is unbuffered, and Bulk declares that its tablets are buffered.

Does a higher dose of magnesium glycinate mean a better supplement?

No. Most people can meet their needs from food plus a modest top-up, and high doses of any magnesium can cause diarrhoea.

UK guidance treats 400mg or less a day from supplements as unlikely to cause harm, so more is not automatically better.

Is it better to take one capsule or two?

The elemental magnesium you take matters, not the number of capsules. One capsule is simply easier to keep up as a daily habit.

In this guide Charava and Pure Encapsulations provide a serving in one capsule, while Cytoplan, Viridian and Bulk need two capsules or tablets.

How much does magnesium glycinate cost per month in the UK?

At the time of writing, Charava is £14.99 for 60 capsules, Cytoplan £14.99 for 60 capsules, Viridian about £16.05 for 60 capsules, Pure Encapsulations about £17.76 for 90 capsules and Bulk £5.99 for 60 tablets.

Compare cost per 100mg of magnesium as well as per bottle: we calculate roughly £0.25 for Charava and Cytoplan, £0.16 for Pure Encapsulations, £0.27 for Viridian and £0.10 for Bulk.

Dose and daily use

How much magnesium glycinate should I take a day?

Follow the directions on the product you choose. UK guidance is that adults need 300mg (men) or 270mg (women) of magnesium a day from all sources, and that 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm.

Remember to count magnesium from every supplement you take, including multivitamins.

When is the best time to take magnesium glycinate?

There is no good evidence that timing matters. Charava suggests an afternoon or evening capsule, and Cytoplan suggests taking it with food.

The best time is whenever you will remember it every day.

Should I take magnesium glycinate with food?

Directions differ between brands, and several suggest taking it with food. Taking it with a meal is a sensible choice if your stomach is sensitive.

Follow the instructions on the product you buy.

How long does magnesium glycinate take to work?

Magnesium is a mineral supplement, not a medicine, and it does not work on a fixed timetable. Responses vary, and some people notice nothing.

Studies of magnesium for sleep ran for weeks, not days, so do not expect a quick effect.

Can I take magnesium glycinate with other supplements or medicines?

Magnesium can interact with some medicines, including some antibiotics and bisphosphonates, and may need to be taken at a different time of day.

If you take prescribed medication or have a health condition, check with your pharmacist or GP before starting.

What the research shows

Does magnesium glycinate help you sleep?

The evidence is limited. A 2021 systematic review of three small trials in 151 older adults with insomnia found people fell asleep about 17 minutes faster on magnesium than on placebo, but judged the evidence to be of low quality.

No health claim for sleep is authorised for magnesium, and the trials did not test glycinate specifically.

Does magnesium glycinate help with stress or anxiety?

The authorised wording is that magnesium contributes to normal psychological function. That is not the same as treating stress or anxiety.

If you are struggling with anxiety or low mood, speak to your GP rather than relying on a supplement.

Will magnesium glycinate help with muscle cramps?

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, but evidence that supplements prevent cramps is mixed, and results differ between groups of people.

If you have frequent or severe cramps, speak to your GP, because they can have causes that a supplement will not address.

Are there any approved health claims for magnesium in the UK?

Yes. Magnesium has authorised claims including contributing to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal muscle function, normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function.

A product must provide at least 15% of the nutrient reference value per daily serving, about 56mg, to use them. Claims about sleep quality or stress relief are not authorised.

Safety and side effects

Is magnesium glycinate safe?

For most healthy adults, UK guidance is that 400mg or less a day of magnesium from supplements is unlikely to cause harm.

There is not enough evidence to say what the effects might be of taking high doses for a long time.

What are the side effects of magnesium glycinate?

The most common side effect of high doses of any magnesium is diarrhoea, and some people also report nausea or stomach discomfort. Glycinate is generally considered gentler than some other forms.

If you have side effects, reduce the dose or stop, and speak to a pharmacist if they persist.

Who should speak to a doctor before taking magnesium glycinate?

Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you have kidney problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are under 18, take prescribed medication or are being treated for a medical condition.

The kidneys remove excess magnesium, so reduced kidney function raises the risk of taking too much.

Can I take magnesium glycinate every day?

Many people take it daily within the amounts on the label, and UK guidance treats 400mg or less a day from supplements as unlikely to cause harm.

It is worth asking whether you need it at all, because most people can get what they need from a varied diet.

Is magnesium glycinate vegan?

Glycine used in supplements is usually made synthetically, so the compound itself need not be animal-derived. The capsule or tablet matters: Charava uses a vegetable (hypromellose) capsule and Viridian is described as vegan.

Check the label of any other product for capsule and ingredient details.

About this guide

Why is Charava ranked first?

Charava is the simplest product here to take: one vegan, UK-made capsule a day with a stated 100mg of elemental magnesium, and a large base of customer reviews on its own site.

It is not the strongest or the cheapest per 100mg, and the product page does not say whether another magnesium compound is used. The Longevity Shop is commercially connected to Charava, which is disclosed at the top of this page.

Is this guide independent?

No. The Longevity Shop is commercially connected to Charava and may earn revenue from purchases made through links on this page.

We disclose that relationship, explain our assessment criteria and state the trade-offs of every product, including Charava's, so you can make your own judgement.

How did you choose the five products?

We selected magnesium glycinate and bisglycinate supplements available to UK buyers that represent the main choices: a simple single-capsule product, a well-known practitioner brand, an unbuffered 200mg, a vegan high-potency option and a low-cost buffered tablet.

Each was assessed on elemental dose, form, ingredients, manufacturing information and value, using manufacturer and retailer information available in October 2026.

Our recommendation

A simpler way to choose your daily magnesium.

Magnesium glycinate products differ mainly in elemental dose, the form used and the number of capsules you need. The headline milligram figure on the front is not the amount of magnesium, so read the elemental figure, check for added oxide, and keep total supplemental magnesium to 400mg a day or less.

Charava Magnesium Glycinate is our top daily-routine pick for one vegan, UK-made capsule with a stated 100mg of magnesium. Cytoplan suits those who want an oxide-free 200mg, Pure Encapsulations those who want the best value capsule, Viridian a vegan 200mg, and Bulk the lowest price.

How we compared

Our review approach

We compared five magnesium glycinate supplements available to UK buyers using published product, manufacturer and retailer information, UK intake guidance and the published research. We prioritised a stated elemental dose, a disclosed form, units per serving, ingredient transparency, manufacturing information and value per 100mg of magnesium.

Our ranking is an editorial judgement for this buying guide, not a clinical comparison, independent certification or laboratory score. We have not conducted a head-to-head efficacy test. Commercial connections are described in the disclosure above.
