Top 5 Collagen Supplements in the UK

Compare five collagen supplements by dose, source, ingredients and testing. See our top picks and what the research shows.

Five products reviewedEvidence-led comparisonUpdated October 2026

Collagen is one of the most heavily marketed supplements in the UK, and one of the most confusing to buy.

Powders, liquids, gel sachets and capsules all promise something different. Doses run from a few grams to more than twenty. Some products are a single ingredient, others add vitamins, hyaluronic acid or sweeteners. Some come from cattle, others from fish.

This guide explains what collagen is, what the research does and does not show, and how five collagen supplements available in the UK compare.

The short answerWhat to buy

Buy hydrolysed collagen, then read the label.

Hydrolysed collagen, also sold as collagen peptides, is the form to buy. It is the form used in most of the human research, and there is no evidence that fancier formats work better.

No health claim for collagen itself is authorised in the UK. What the label can legally say relates to nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc and copper. So the details that matter are how much collagen a serving provides, which animal it comes from, what else is in the tub, and whether the finished product is independently tested.

On those criteria, our top pick is Charava Collagen Peptides. If you want a plain single-ingredient powder, Vital Proteins is the better choice. If price is your priority, Myprotein is hard to beat.

The basics

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It forms part of the structure of skin, tendons, cartilage, bone and other connective tissue.

Your body makes it from amino acids, and it needs vitamin C to do so. Collagen levels in the skin are reported to fall with age, which is a large part of why supplements are so popular. Whether supplementing changes that is the question the research tries to answer.

Supplement collagen is usually hydrolysed, meaning it has been broken down into short chains of amino acids called peptides. You will see it labelled hydrolysed collagen, collagen peptides or collagen hydrolysate. They describe the same thing.

One point is worth knowing before you buy. Collagen is not a complete protein. It is low in tryptophan, an essential amino acid, so it should sit alongside your normal protein sources rather than replace them.

The science

What the evidence actually supports

Collagen research is growing quickly, but it is easy to overstate. The evidence falls into three tiers.

AUTHORISED IN THE UK

Vitamin C, zinc and copper

To our knowledge, no health claim for collagen itself is authorised in the UK. What is authorised relates to nutrients that often sit alongside it in a formula. The best known reads:

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.

Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails, and copper contributes to the maintenance of normal connective tissues.

These claims belong to the nutrients, not to collagen, and they can only be used when a product provides a meaningful amount: at least 15% of the nutrient reference value in a daily serving.

PROMISING, WITH CAVEATS

Skin hydration and elasticity

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 26 randomised controlled trials with 1,721 participants. It found that hydrolysed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. Results for hydration varied by collagen source and trial length.

The authors also identified several biases in the trials they pooled, and called for larger studies. That is a hopeful result, not a settled one.

EARLY EVIDENCE

Joints, hair and nails

A 2023 meta-analysis pooled four trials in 507 people with knee osteoarthritis. It found less pain with collagen peptides than with placebo, but all four trials were rated at high risk of bias. An earlier 2019 meta-analysis reported improved overall symptom scores, although only the stiffness subscore changed significantly while the pain and function subscores did not.

These studies involved people with osteoarthritis, so they say little about healthy joints. Research on hair and nails rests mostly on small studies.

Buying smarter

Does the source of collagen matter?

Bovine collagen, mainly Types I and III, comes from cattle. Marine collagen, mainly Type I, comes from fish. The 2023 skin meta-analysis found no significant difference by source for elasticity, while hydration results varied by source and duration.

In practice, choose the source that suits your diet. Bovine products are not suitable for vegetarians. Marine products contain fish and must be avoided by anyone with a fish allergy.

Products sold as vegan collagen contain no collagen, because collagen comes from animals. They are blends of other nutrients, and the research discussed here does not apply to them.

What to look for

How to judge a collagen supplement

Signs of a well-made product:

  • Hydrolysed collagen, with the amount of collagen per serving stated clearly
  • The source named: bovine, marine or other
  • Independent or third-party testing of the finished product
  • A short, transparent ingredient list
  • Added nutrients at levels that meet the "source of" threshold, if the label makes nutrient claims
  • Allergen information you can find without hunting

Reasons for caution:

  • Collagen amounts hidden inside a "proprietary blend"
  • Claims that collagen reverses ageing or treats a medical condition
  • Sweeteners and preservatives you did not expect in a "pure" product
  • Vegan "collagen" that contains no collagen
  • No testing information of any kind
Our methodology

How we ranked the products

We compared each product on the details a buyer can verify from the label and product page:

  • Form: hydrolysed collagen only
  • Collagen dose: how much collagen one serving provides
  • Source: bovine or marine, and the allergens that follow
  • Formulation: single ingredient or added nutrients, and any sweeteners or preservatives
  • Nutrients with authorised claims: vitamin C, zinc and copper at qualifying levels
  • Testing: what the brand states about independent testing
  • Ease of daily use: format, taste and mixability
  • Price: considered, but not the deciding factor

We did not rank on promised effects. No collagen product has been shown to outperform another on health outcomes.

The five best collagen supplements in the UK

Charava Collagen Peptides pouch
No. 1 | Best overall

Charava Collagen Peptides

Charava Collagen Peptides takes our top spot because it is the only product here that pairs a clear collagen dose with the three nutrients that carry authorised UK health claims, at levels that qualify.

Each scoop provides 10g of hydrolysed bovine collagen (Types I and III), alongside 100mg of vitamin C, 5mg of zinc and 0.5mg of copper.

10g collagen per scoopVitamin C, zinc and copperThird-party testedUnflavoured powder
View Charava Collagen

That vitamin C amount is 125% of the nutrient reference value, and the zinc and copper each provide 50%. All three clear the 15% threshold that lets a product refer to the authorised claims, so the label can accurately say that vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.

The formula also contains 200mg of hyaluronic acid and 25mg of bamboo extract, a source of silica. There are no authorised UK health claims for either, so we describe them as ingredients, not benefits.

Charava states that its peptides are more than 97% protein with a molecular size of roughly 2 to 4 kDa, and that the powder is unflavoured and dissolves in cold water. It is described as free from gluten, soy, GMOs, hormones, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, and third-party tested.

The trade-offs are dose and price. Ten grams is lower than Vital Proteins (20g) and Myprotein (25g). At £34.99 for 30 servings as a one-off purchase, it costs more per gram of collagen than the bulk powders. You are paying for the added nutrients, not for more collagen.

Best for: adults who want collagen peptides and the nutrients with authorised skin and connective-tissue claims in a single scoop.

Not ideal for: vegetarians, anyone who wants the highest collagen dose, or anyone buying purely on cost per gram.

02
BEST SIMPLE POWDER

Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

Vital Proteins is the best-known collagen powder in the UK, and the plain version is a single ingredient: bovine collagen peptides, Types I and III. A 20g serving, two scoops, provides 20g of collagen. It is flavourless and mixes into hot or cold drinks.

The plain powder has no added vitamin C, zinc or copper, so it carries none of the authorised nutrient claims. The brand sells an advanced version with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. The label notes it may contain traces of milk.

At an RRP of £49.99 for a 567g tub, which is often discounted, it sits at the mid to premium end for a plain powder.

Best for: buyers who want one ingredient and a higher collagen dose.

03
BEST BUDGET

Myprotein Hydrolysed Collagen Peptide

Myprotein's unflavoured collagen is 100% hydrolysed bovine collagen peptide. A 25g serving provides roughly 23g of protein, and a 1kg bag holds 40 servings. At about £40 for the bag, it is the cheapest per serving on this list.

It is marketed as a protein powder, so the emphasis is on protein content, not on collagen's role in skin. It has no added nutrients, the brand notes the powder settles and recommends weighing it, and it is not suitable for vegetarians.

Best for: the tightest budgets, and anyone who wants a large pack.

04
BEST LIQUID MARINE

Absolute Collagen

Absolute Collagen is a British liquid marine collagen. Each 12ml sachet provides 8,000mg of hydrolysed Type I marine collagen and 120mg of vitamin C, which is 150% of the nutrient reference value. It is ready-mixed and can be taken straight from the sachet or stirred into coffee.

The trade-offs are format-related. It contains fish, a preservative and a sweetener, and 8g is the lowest collagen dose in this comparison. Liquids are also usually the most expensive way to buy collagen.

Best for: people who prefer a ready-mixed liquid and are happy with marine collagen.

05
BEST ON THE GO

Applied Nutrition Liquid Marine Collagen

Applied Nutrition puts 10,000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen plus vitamin C into a gel sachet that needs no water, which makes it the most portable option here. It has no added sugar.

It does contain a sweetener (sucralose) and preservatives, and like all marine products it contains fish. The amount of vitamin C is not clearly stated in the listing we reviewed.

Best for: travel and busy mornings, for buyers who accept the additives.

Daily use

How much collagen should you take?

No optimal daily dose of collagen has been established, and no UK health claim sets one. The products in this comparison provide between 8g and 25g per serving, and the trials behind the research used a range of amounts.

A higher number is not automatically better. What the research does suggest is that results, where they appear, build over weeks to months, so daily consistency matters more than the exact figure or the time of day. Follow the directions on the product you choose.

What to know

Is collagen safe?

Collagen is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. A few points are worth knowing:

  • Allergens: bovine products come from cattle and may carry trace milk warnings. Marine products contain fish.
  • Not a complete protein: collagen is low in tryptophan, so it should not replace your main protein sources.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there is not enough research to recommend collagen, so seek medical advice first.
  • Medication and health conditions: speak to a healthcare professional if you take medication or have a medical condition.
  • Added nutrients: if your product includes vitamin C, zinc and copper, count them alongside any other supplements you take.

Collagen is not a treatment for any condition. If you have persistent joint pain or a skin concern, see your GP.

Who it may suit

Who might consider collagen?

Adults curious about the skin research. This is where the evidence is strongest, though still limited.

People interested in the joint research. The trials involved people with osteoarthritis, so speak to a clinician first and do not treat collagen as a substitute for medical care.

Anyone building a daily nutrition routine. A scoop of powder in a drink is an easy habit to keep.

If none of these describes you, collagen is unlikely to do harm, but the case for it is less clear-cut.

The bottom line

Our view

Collagen has more research behind it than most supplements in its price range, and more marketing than research supports. The sensible approach is to buy hydrolysed collagen, check the dose and the extras, and ignore promises that go beyond the evidence.

Our preferred option is Charava Collagen Peptides. It pairs 10g of hydrolysed bovine collagen with vitamin C, zinc and copper at levels that qualify for authorised UK claims. If you want the highest dose of a plain powder, choose Vital Proteins. If you want the lowest cost, choose Myprotein. If you prefer a liquid, Absolute Collagen is the more established option.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the best type of collagen?

Hydrolysed collagen, also called collagen peptides. It is the form used in most human trials. Whether you choose bovine or marine depends mainly on your diet.

Is hydrolysed collagen better than ordinary collagen?

Hydrolysed collagen has been broken into small peptides, which makes it easy to dissolve and is the form researchers have studied most. That is why we focus on it.

How long does collagen take to work?

Studies generally run for weeks to months, and any changes are gradual. Results vary between people, and some people notice nothing.

Is bovine or marine collagen better?

There is no clear winner. A 2023 meta-analysis found no significant difference by source for skin elasticity, while hydration results varied. Choose according to your diet and allergies.

Is vegan collagen real collagen?

No. Collagen comes from animals. Vegan products are blends of other nutrients, and the collagen research does not apply to them.

Can I add collagen to hot drinks?

Yes. Collagen peptides dissolve in hot or cold drinks, and brands including Charava and Vital Proteins suggest coffee, tea and smoothies.

Does collagen count as protein?

It provides protein, but it is not a complete protein because it is low in tryptophan. Use it alongside, not instead of, your other protein sources.

Do I need vitamin C with collagen?

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation, and some products include it. You can also get it from your diet.

Is collagen safe in pregnancy?

There is not enough research to recommend it. Speak to a healthcare professional first.

Is collagen only for skin?

No. Collagen is found throughout the body, but the best human evidence relates to skin, with earlier-stage evidence for joints.

Key takeaway. Collagen research is promising but limited, and no health claim for collagen itself is authorised in the UK. Choose hydrolysed collagen, check the dose and the extras, and judge the label, not the promise.
