Magnesium glycinate is one of the most searched supplements in the UAE, but labels differ widely in how clearly they show what you are getting.

Looking for the UK ranking? See our best magnesium glycinate supplements in the UK guide.

Only one of the 8 products publishes test results we could read. Some state the elemental magnesium per serving and the weight of the glycinate; others give only one figure, or none. Five list glycinate as the only magnesium form; three are blended with magnesium oxide. Warnings range from detailed kidney and medication cautions to none at all.

This guide explains what magnesium glycinate is, what the evidence says, the safety points to check and what to look for on a label. Products are ranked only by the weighted scores in our scoring table, using the method described below. Prices are in UAE dirhams (AED).

How the ranking was decided

Scores by criterion

Each product is scored 0 to 10 on every criterion. The weighted total out of 100 (the absolute score) sets the ranking. Weights were fixed before scoring and are the same for every product: 90% is on magnesium form, dose labelling, fillers, testing and labelling, and 10% on price per daily serving. Anything a page does not disclose scores 0 for that item and is shown as "not disclosed": we never assume a source, an ingredient or a test we cannot see. Each product also shows a relative score (top product = 100): its absolute score divided by the top product's absolute score, multiplied by 100 (see how relative scores work). Evidence was checked on 5 November 2026. Full method.

Magnesium glycinate: what it is and what the evidence says

Magnesium is an essential mineral found in leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains. Supplements use different compounds. Magnesium glycinate binds magnesium to glycine, so the compound weighs much more than the magnesium it provides. Labels may list the compound, the elemental magnesium, or both.

The research below is described so you know what has been studied. It is not a claim that any product in this guide has any effect, and none of these studies tested the products here.

Authorised claims

In Great Britain, magnesium has authorised claims, for example that it contributes to normal muscle function, normal functioning of the nervous system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Claims about sleep, migraines, anxiety or blood pressure are not authorised. UAE authorities apply their own rules to supplement claims.

Absorption of different forms

Small studies suggest that more soluble forms of magnesium are absorbed better than magnesium oxide. One small study in people with ileal resection compared magnesium diglycinate with magnesium oxide. Evidence comparing glycinate with other soluble forms is limited.

Studies on sleep

A 2021 systematic review of trials in older adults with insomnia found the evidence was low quality and insufficient to make firm conclusions. Sleep claims for magnesium are not authorised.

Elemental magnesium

The amount that counts towards your intake is the elemental magnesium, not the weight of the glycinate compound. Compare products on elemental magnesium per daily serving.

These points describe published research on magnesium generally. They are not claims about any product in this guide.

Safety

Safety points to check before you buy

Kidney problems

The kidneys remove excess magnesium. If you have kidney problems, do not take magnesium supplements without medical advice. Only three of the 8 product pages mention kidney problems.

Medicines

Magnesium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (tetracyclines and quinolones) and bisphosphonates, so these need to be taken hours apart. Diuretics and long-term acid-reducing medicines can affect magnesium levels. Ask your pharmacist about timing.

How much is too much

The US National Institutes of Health sets an upper level of 350mg a day for adults from supplements and medicines. Higher doses can cause diarrhoea, nausea and cramps. Add up magnesium from all products you take, including multivitamins and electrolyte drinks.

Pregnancy and children

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before taking a supplement. Keep supplements out of reach of children; adult doses are not suitable for them.

Stop and seek advice if you get persistent diarrhoea, stomach cramps or nausea.

What to look for in a magnesium glycinate supplement

01. Elemental magnesium

Look for the elemental magnesium per daily serving, and ideally the glycinate weight too, so you know what you are comparing.

02. Pure glycinate or a blend

"Buffered" products often add magnesium oxide. Check whether glycinate is the only form listed.

03. A certificate you can read

"Third-party tested" means little without a report showing the magnesium content and heavy metals, from an accredited lab, ideally for a named batch.

04. Few fillers

Check the full ingredient list. Microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silica and maltodextrin are common.

05. Clear warnings

A responsible label covers kidney problems, medicines, pregnancy and a daily maximum.

06. Capsule and dietary status

Check the capsule material and whether the product is vegan, vegetarian or halal if that matters to you.

Before you buy

Label claims to treat with caution

Sleep and stress claims

Claims that magnesium improves sleep or reduces anxiety or stress are not authorised in Great Britain, and the evidence is limited.

Migraine and blood pressure claims

Some retail pages say magnesium reduces migraines or supports blood pressure. These are not authorised claims for a food supplement in Great Britain.

Big numbers on the front

A large figure on the front may be the glycinate compound weight, not the elemental magnesium. Check the supplement facts.

Reviews and endorsements

Be wary of customer quotes and seals without a report or details of what was tested.

Frequently asked questions

Magnesium glycinate: your questions answered

Magnesium, safety and this guide

What is magnesium glycinate?

Magnesium glycinate (also called magnesium bisglycinate) is magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Labels can show either the weight of the whole compound or the amount of elemental magnesium it provides, which is much lower, so check which figure you are reading. Some products labelled "glycinate" are blended with magnesium oxide.

Does magnesium have any authorised health claims?

Yes. In Great Britain, authorised claims for magnesium include that it contributes to normal muscle function, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal psychological function, normal energy-yielding metabolism, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, electrolyte balance and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. Claims about sleep, migraines, anxiety or blood pressure are not authorised. UAE authorities apply their own rules to supplement claims.

How much magnesium is too much?

The US National Institutes of Health gives an upper level of 350mg a day for magnesium from supplements and medicines for adults (food is not counted). High doses can cause diarrhoea, nausea and cramps. Keep to the directed dose and include any magnesium in other products you take.

Who should be careful with magnesium supplements?

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first if you have kidney problems, take any medicine (especially antibiotics such as tetracyclines or quinolones, bisphosphonates for osteoporosis, diuretics or long-term acid-reducing medicines), or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Magnesium can reduce the absorption of some medicines, so timing matters.

Can I buy these products in the UAE?

Yes. Every product in this guide was in stock with AED pricing from a seller delivering in the UAE when we checked: iHerb UAE, Boots UAE or the brand's own UAE site. Delivery charges and times vary by seller and are not included in our prices.

How did you choose and score the products?

We looked for magnesium glycinate capsules that UAE buyers can order and verified 8 products on live product pages on 5 November 2026. We scored each on seven fixed criteria weighted 90% on quality and labelling and 10% on price per daily serving. Anything a page did not disclose scored 0. We did not buy or test the products ourselves.

Do you earn money from this guide?

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. This doesn't affect how we rank products: every product is assessed with the same method. We scored every product with the same fixed criteria and weights, and we show every score.

Our recommendation

Check the elemental magnesium, the warnings and the testing

If you have kidney problems, take any medicine, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking magnesium.

Charava Magnesium Glycinate has the highest score (84.8/100): it is the only product with readable test reports from an accredited lab, lists nothing but the glycinate and the capsule and has the most complete warnings, though it costs more per day than most. Sports Research Magnesium Glycinate is 21.2 points behind, with pure glycinate, one added ingredient and good warnings, but no published test report. Price per daily serving counts for 10% of the score.

How we compared

How we score products

We compared 8 magnesium glycinate capsule products that UAE buyers can order, using the product page on the site they would buy from (a brand's UAE site, iHerb UAE or Boots UAE), its label information and any testing documents linked from the brand's site, read on 5 November 2026. Each product was scored 0 to 10 on seven criteria. The weights and point rules were fixed before scoring and are identical for every product. If a page does not disclose something, that item scores 0 and we say "not disclosed".

  • Magnesium form (20%). Glycinate or bisglycinate named (3 points); glycinate is the only magnesium form, with no oxide or other blend (3); chelate supplier named, such as Albion (2); magnesium content confirmed on a readable certificate (2).
  • Dose and label transparency (15%). Elemental magnesium per serving stated (3); glycinate compound weight stated (2); clear daily directions (2); capsules and servings per pack stated (2, or 1 if only one is given); no conflicting or ambiguous figures (1).
  • Fillers and additives (20%). Starts at 10. We deduct 2 points for each bulking agent or filler, flow agent or lubricant, sweetener, preservative or colour, and 1 point for each emulsifier, flavouring, antioxidant, acidity regulator, processing aid or carrier oil. The capsule shell and the magnesium ingredient are not deducted. Only listed ingredients are deducted; an incomplete list loses points under labelling. Minimum 0.
  • Testing and certificates (15%). A readable test report for the finished product (4; 2 if it covers only the raw ingredient); heavy-metal results on it (2); the lab's accreditation shown (2); a report matched to a named lot (2). Statements or seals such as "third-party tested" without a report score 0.
  • Label and safety warnings (15%). Complete ingredient list (2, or 1 if partial); a pregnancy or breastfeeding warning (2); a medication caution (2); a kidney or other condition-specific caution (2); an age statement (1); a do-not-exceed statement (1). Warnings on the page the buyer orders from count.
  • Capsule, vegan and allergen clarity (5%). Capsule material named (4); vegan or vegetarian status stated (3); an allergen or gluten statement (3).
  • Price per daily serving (10%). 10 × (lowest price per daily serving ÷ this product's price per daily serving), in AED. Price is based on each brand's 3-pack price divided by 3 to give a single-pack price, then per daily serving; where no 3-pack is sold we use the single-pack price. We use the one-off price shown, not subscriptions, excluding delivery. One serving is the smallest directed daily amount, so products with different doses are compared on the cost of following their own directions.

Relative scores (top product = 100). A product's relative score is its absolute score (weighted total out of 100) divided by the absolute score of the top product in this guide, multiplied by 100 and rounded to one decimal place. It shows how each product compares with the best one we assessed. It is not a percentage of our criteria met: the top product, Charava Magnesium Glycinate, scored 84.8/100 on our absolute criteria. The same calculation is applied to every product, so it does not change the order.

We also looked at other products. We left out products that combine magnesium glycinate with other actives (such as black pepper extract or B vitamins), magnesium lysinate glycinate blends, powders, liquids and gummies, so the comparison is like for like. We included one product per brand. The ranking is an editorial judgement based on these scores. It is not a clinical comparison, an independent certification or a laboratory test, and we did not buy or test any product. Commission is explained in the note at the top of this page.
