Best S-Equol Supplements UK 2026: Seven Products Scored on the Evidence
Seven S-equol supplements available to UK buyers, scored mainly on S-equol form and source, fillers and additives, testing and label warnings, with price as a minor factor.
Most S-equol supplements provide 10mg a day, but what their labels disclose varies widely.
None of the 7 products publishes a test report we could read. Some state how their S-equol is made and some do not; one does not say it is S-equol at all. Added ingredients range from none stated to seven, and three of the products combine S-equol with other active ingredients.
This guide explains what S-equol is, what has been studied, the safety points to check and what to look for on a label. Products are ranked only by the weighted scores in our scoring table, using the method described below.

Scores by criterion
Each product is scored 0 to 10 on every criterion. The weighted total out of 100 (the absolute score) sets the ranking. Weights were fixed before scoring and are the same for every product: 90% is on S-equol form and source, dose, fillers, testing and labelling, and 10% on price per daily serving. Anything a page does not disclose scores 0 for that item and is shown as "not disclosed": we never assume a source, an ingredient or a test we cannot see. Each product also shows a relative score (top product = 100): its absolute score divided by the top product's absolute score, multiplied by 100 (see how relative scores work). Evidence was checked on 2 November 2026. Full method.

The top product is 15.7 points ahead of the second. None of the 7 products publishes a readable test report, so all score 0 for testing. Three products are multi-ingredient (marked in their reviews); their price per day also pays for the other ingredients, so daily costs are not like for like.
S-equol: what it is and what has been studied
Equol is made from daidzein, an isoflavone in soy, by certain gut bacteria. The form the body makes is S-equol. Studies suggest that only a minority of people in Western countries make equol from the soy they eat, compared with a larger share in East Asian populations. S-equol supplements supply it directly; the ingredient in most of them is made by fermenting soy germ.
No nutrition or health claim is authorised for equol or soy isoflavones in Great Britain. The research below is described so you know what has been studied. It is not a claim that any product in this guide has any effect, and none of these studies tested the products here.
No authorised claims
The GB nutrition and health claims register has no authorised health claim for equol or soy isoflavones. Statements on product pages about menopause, hot flushes, skin, bone, hair, weight or blood sugar are not authorised claims.
How equol is formed
Reviews describe how gut bacteria convert daidzein to S-equol, why people differ in whether they produce it, and how it behaves in the body.
Studies in menopausal women
Small randomised trials, mostly in Japan and the US and mostly using one manufacturer's fermented soy germ ingredient, have looked at menopausal symptom questionnaires and markers of bone turnover. A 2019 meta-analysis pooled a small number of these trials. The trials were small, short and differed in design.

Regulatory status
We found no S-equol entry in the GB novel-food register or the EU Union list of novel foods. The European Commission lists an ongoing novel-food application for an S-equol-rich fermented soy germ ingredient, proposed for adults and excluding pregnant and breastfeeding women. Ask the brand if you want to know how its S-equol is authorised.
These points describe published research on equol generally. They are not health claims and not claims about any product in this guide.
Safety points to check before you buy
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and under-18s
Do not take S-equol if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and do not give it to children or under-18s. One of the 7 product pages we read has no pregnancy warning.
Hormone-sensitive conditions
Equol interacts with oestrogen receptors. If you have or have had a hormone-sensitive condition, such as breast or endometrial cancer, endometriosis or fibroids, speak to your doctor before taking it. The European Food Safety Authority has assessed isolated isoflavone supplements in peri- and post-menopausal women and noted that women with or with a history of oestrogen-dependent cancer were outside its assessment.
Medicines, including HRT
If you take HRT, hormonal contraception, thyroid medicine, tamoxifen or other medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first. Treat any statement that a supplement will not interfere with HRT with caution.
Soy allergy
Most S-equol ingredients are made from soy. If you are allergic to soy, check the label, and ask the brand where its S-equol comes from if the label does not say.
Keep to the directed dose. Do not combine several products that contain S-equol or soy isoflavones without advice. Stop and seek medical advice if you have side effects.
What to look for in an S-equol supplement
01. "S-equol", with the amount
Look for S-equol named, with the amount per daily serving. A product that says only "equol", or gives the weight of a soy extract, may contain less.
02. How it is made
Look for the source, for example fermented soy germ. It also tells you whether soy is present.
03. A certificate you can read
"Third-party tested" means little without a report showing the batch, the S-equol content and heavy metals, from an accredited lab. None of the products here publishes one.
04. Single or combined
Some products add other actives, such as resveratrol, probiotics or vitamins. Check you are not doubling up with something you already take.
05. Few fillers and additives
Check the full ingredient list. Starches, cellulose, silicon dioxide, stearates and sweeteners are common.
06. Clear warnings
A responsible label covers pregnancy and breastfeeding, under-18s, hormone-sensitive conditions, HRT and other medicines, and a daily maximum.
Label claims to treat with caution
Menopause and hot-flush claims
No health claim is authorised for equol in Great Britain, so statements that a product relieves hot flushes or supports menopause are not authorised claims.
Skin, bone, hair and metabolism claims
The same applies to claims about skin, bone, hair growth, weight or blood sugar made for S-equol.
"Safe with HRT" or "no side effects"
Statements that play down interactions or risks are not a substitute for advice from your doctor.
Reviews and endorsements
Be wary of testimonials you cannot verify, or expert quotes without a full name and qualification.
Seven S-equol supplements, in score order
Products appear in order of their absolute score from the scoring table. We read each product page, and any testing documents and label images linked from it, on 2 November 2026. Where a brand states something we could not verify, we say it is stated by the brand. We have not bought or tested these products ourselves.

Charava S-Equol 10mg Capsules
One capsule with 10mg of S-equol, described as filler-free in an HPMC capsule, with full warnings, at the lowest cost per day here. How the S-equol is made is not stated.
Reasons to choose it
- Lowest cost per daily serving here (£0.90 on the 90-day option).
- No fillers or flow agents stated: S-equol in an HPMC capsule (stated by Charava).
- The most complete warnings here, including hormone-sensitive conditions, HRT and hormonal contraception.
Points to consider
- Does not say how its S-equol is made or where it comes from.
- No formal ingredient list, and the page makes menopause, skin and bone statements that are not authorised claims in Great Britain (stated by Charava).
Our verdict: A simple single-ingredient capsule with strong warnings at the lowest price here. Publishing the S-equol source and a test report would make it much easier to verify.
DHC Soy Isoflavone Equol (10mg S-equol)

Strengths
- States the source: fermented soy germ extract.
- Clear dose: 10mg S-equol in one tablet a day.
- Second-lowest cost per day before shipping and import charges.
Considerations
- Four added ingredients, including two flow agents.
- No medication warning.
- Sold in US dollars from Japan by a retailer; UK import charges are the buyer's responsibility (stated by the retailer).
Our verdict: Clear about its source and dose, but more additives, thinner warnings and import costs to factor in.
Garden of Life Herbals Menopause + Hair Growth

Strengths
- Clear dose and pack information.
- Vegan softgel, certified vegan and gluten-free, with a soy allergen statement.
- Pregnancy, medication and children warnings.
Considerations
- Not a single-ingredient S-equol product: also contains resveratrol, Keranatâ„¢ and a probiotic.
- S-equol source not stated.
- Makes hot-flush and hair-growth claims that are not authorised in Great Britain (stated by Garden of Life).
Our verdict: Clearly labelled, but a combination product with no published testing.
The Postbiotic Company Women's Wellness

Strengths
- States the S-equol amount and that it comes from soy.
- Full warnings, including hormone-sensitive conditions.
- Every active ingredient listed with its amount.
Considerations
- Not a single-ingredient product: S-equol is one of seven actives.
- Seven additives, including three sweeteners: the lowest fillers score here.
Our verdict: Transparent labelling and warnings, but a sweetened multi-ingredient chew rather than an S-equol supplement.
Nutrined Equol Capsules

Strengths
- Low cost per daily serving (£1.01).
- Vegetable capsule with a soy allergen statement.
- Pregnancy and medication warnings.
Considerations
- Does not say S-equol, and the 12mg could be the soy extract rather than equol.
- Three fillers or flow agents.
- The retailer page makes hormonal and brain-health statements that are not authorised claims in Great Britain (stated by the retailer).
Our verdict: Inexpensive, but you cannot tell from the pages how much S-equol it contains.
MitoQ Hormonal Metabolic Control

Strengths
- States the S-equol amount and source.
- Vegetarian capsule, gluten-free.
- Pregnancy and medication warnings.
Considerations
- Not a single-ingredient product.
- Five fillers or processing aids.
- Statements that it will not interfere with HRT and has no known major side effects play down risks; weight and blood-sugar claims are not authorised in Great Britain (stated by MitoQ).
Our verdict: Clear on dose and source, but many additives and reassurances about safety that we would want backed up.
Equelle Menopause Symptom Relief

Strengths
- States the source: fermented soy germ.
- Clear daily S-equol amount.
- Soy allergen statement.
Considerations
- Only available in the UK through a reseller; the brand ships to the US only.
- Five added ingredients.
- No pregnancy, age or do-not-exceed warning found; highest cost per day here.
Our verdict: A well-known S-equol tablet, but hard to buy in the UK and thinly labelled for UK buyers.
Comparisons refer to the named product and pack, not the brand's whole range. Specifications, prices and stock can change; we last checked them on 2 November 2026. "Not disclosed" means we could not find it on the pages we read, not that a product is untested or poor quality.

Price is based on each brand's 3-pack price divided by 3 to give a single-pack price, then per daily serving; where no 3-pack is sold we use the single-pack price. Prices are one-off prices (no subscriptions), excluding delivery, checked 2 November 2026. One serving is the directed daily amount. S-equol: your questions answered
S-equol, safety and this guide
What is S-equol?
Equol is a compound that some people's gut bacteria make from daidzein, an isoflavone found in soy. S-equol is the form the body makes. Studies suggest that only a minority of people in Western countries produce equol from the soy they eat. Supplements supply S-equol directly, usually made by fermenting soy germ.
Does S-equol have any approved health claims?
No. There is no authorised nutrition or health claim for equol or soy isoflavones in Great Britain, so statements on product pages about menopause, hot flushes, skin, bone, hair or metabolism are not authorised claims. We make no claims about what any product does.
Who should not take S-equol?
Do not take S-equol if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and it is not for children or under-18s. If you have or have had a hormone-sensitive condition (such as breast or endometrial cancer, or endometriosis), or take HRT, hormonal contraception, thyroid medicine or any other medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.
Is S-equol the same as soy isoflavones?
No. Soy isoflavone supplements supply daidzein and genistein, which some people convert to equol in the gut. S-equol supplements supply equol itself. Some products in this guide combine S-equol with other ingredients, so check the full label.
What is the regulatory status of S-equol in Great Britain?
We found no entry for S-equol in the GB novel-food register or the EU Union list of novel foods when we checked. The European Commission lists an ongoing novel-food application for an S-equol-rich fermented soy germ ingredient. If you want to know how a product's S-equol is authorised, ask the brand.
How did you choose and score the products?
We looked for S-equol supplements that UK buyers can order and verified 7 products on live product pages on 2 November 2026. Only four single-ingredient S-equol products were available to UK buyers, so we also included three multi-ingredient products and label them clearly. We scored each on seven fixed criteria weighted 90% on quality and labelling and 10% on price per daily serving. Anything a page did not disclose scored 0. We did not buy or test the products ourselves.
Do you earn money from this guide?
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. This doesn't affect how we rank products: every product is assessed with the same method. We scored every product with the same fixed criteria and weights, and we show every score.
Check the warnings and what the label says about S-equol
S-equol has no authorised health claims in Great Britain. If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, under 18, take HRT, hormonal contraception or any other medication, or have or have had a hormone-sensitive condition, speak to your doctor before taking it.
Charava S-Equol 10mg Capsules has the highest score (75.5/100): it states no fillers, has the most complete warnings and the lowest cost per day, but it does not say how its S-equol is made and publishes no test report. DHC Soy Isoflavone Equol (10mg S-equol) is 15.7 points behind; it states a fermented soy germ source but has more additives and is imported from Japan. No product here publishes a readable test report.
How we score products
We compared 7 S-equol supplements available to UK buyers, using each product page, its label images and any testing documents linked from it, read on 2 November 2026. Each product was scored 0 to 10 on seven criteria. The weights and point rules were fixed before scoring and are identical for every product. If a page does not disclose something, that item scores 0 and we say "not disclosed". Figures a brand states are credited the same way for every brand, and described as stated by the brand where we could not verify them.
- S-equol form and source (20%). S-equol (the S-form) named (3 points); how it is made or its source stated, such as fermented soy germ (3); S-equol per daily serving stated (3); S-equol content shown on a readable certificate (1).
- Dose and label transparency (15%). S-equol per daily serving stated (3); per capsule or tablet stated (2); no conflicting dose figures (3); units and servings per pack stated (2, or 1 if only one is given).
- Fillers and additives (20%). Starts at 10. We deduct 2 points for each bulking agent or filler, flow agent, sweetener, preservative or colour, and 1 point for each emulsifier, flavouring, antioxidant, acidity regulator, or processing aid, oil, wax or disintegrant. The capsule or softgel shell, a tablet coating, the S-equol ingredient and declared active ingredients are not deducted. Where a brand states there are no fillers and lists no other ingredient, we take that as stated. Minimum 0.
- Testing and certificates (15%). A readable test report for this product published (4); heavy-metal results on it (2); the lab's accreditation shown (2); results matched to batches on sale (2). Statements such as "third-party tested" score 0.
- Label and safety warnings (15%). Complete ingredient list (2, or 1 if partial); a pregnancy or breastfeeding warning (2); a medication caution (2); a caution for hormone-sensitive or gynaecological conditions (2); an age statement (1); a do-not-exceed statement (1). A statement playing down risks or interactions loses 2 points.
- Capsule or tablet, vegan and allergen clarity (5%). Capsule or softgel material, tablet coating, or chewable form named (4); vegan or vegetarian status stated (3); an allergen or gluten statement (3).
- Price per daily serving (10%). 10 × (lowest price per daily serving ÷ this product's price per daily serving). Price is based on each brand's 3-pack price divided by 3 to give a single-pack price, then per daily serving; where no 3-pack is sold we use the single-pack price. We use one-off prices, not subscriptions, excluding delivery, from the page a UK buyer would order from.
Relative scores (top product = 100). A product's relative score is its absolute score (weighted total out of 100) divided by the absolute score of the top product in this guide, multiplied by 100 and rounded to one decimal place. It shows how each product compares with the best one we assessed. It is not a percentage of our criteria met: the top product, Charava S-Equol 10mg Capsules, scored 75.5/100 on our absolute criteria. The same calculation is applied to every product, so it does not change the order.
Only four single-ingredient S-equol products were available to UK buyers when we checked (Charava, DHC, Nutrined and Equelle), so we also included three multi-ingredient products that contain 10mg of S-equol a day and label them as such. We found no S-equol listings on Amazon UK, and we left out a marketplace listing priced far above the brand's own. Equelle's brand site ships to the US only, so we used a UK reseller. The ranking is an editorial judgement based on these scores. It is not a clinical comparison, an independent certification or a laboratory test, and we did not buy or test any product. Commission is explained in the note at the top of this page.
