Best Berberine Supplements UK 2026: Six Products Scored on the Evidence

Six berberine supplements available to UK buyers, scored mainly on form, source and purity, fillers and additives, testing and label warnings, with price as a minor factor.

Most berberine capsules contain 500mg, but how much their pages disclose about purity, testing and safety varies widely.

3 of the 6 products publish test results we could read, and only one ties a report from an accredited lab to a named, recent batch. Some state a purity figure and the plant source; others state neither. Warnings range from detailed medication cautions to none at all, which matters for an ingredient known to interact with medicines.

This guide explains what berberine is, what has been studied, the safety points to check and what to look for on a label. Products are ranked only by the weighted scores in our scoring table, using the method described below.

How the ranking was decided

Scores by criterion

Each product is scored 0 to 10 on every criterion. The weighted total out of 100 (the absolute score) sets the ranking. Weights were fixed before scoring and are the same for every product: 90% is on form, source and purity, dose, fillers, testing and labelling, and 10% on price per daily serving. Anything a page does not disclose scores 0 for that item and is shown as "not disclosed": we never assume a source, an ingredient or a test we cannot see. Each product also shows a relative score (top product = 100): its absolute score divided by the top product's absolute score, multiplied by 100 (see how relative scores work). Evidence was checked on 5 November 2026. Full method.

Know what you are buying

Berberine: what it is and what has been studied

Berberine is an alkaloid found in plants such as Indian barberry (Berberis aristata), goldenseal and Coptis. Supplements usually contain berberine hydrochloride extracted from barberry root, often standardised to 97% or more. Only a small fraction of oral berberine reaches the bloodstream, which is why some brands use phytosome or other forms.

No nutrition or health claim is authorised for berberine in Great Britain. The research below is described so you know what has been studied. It is not a claim that any product in this guide has any effect, and none of these studies tested the products here.

No authorised claims

The GB nutrition and health claims register has no authorised health claim for berberine. Statements on product pages about blood sugar, weight, cholesterol, heart health or metabolism are not authorised claims.

Studies on blood glucose

Meta-analyses have pooled randomised trials, mostly conducted in China, of berberine in people with type 2 diabetes. Many trials were small, short or at risk of bias, and many combined berberine with medicines. These are studies of patients under medical care, not of healthy supplement users.

Studies on blood lipids

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled trials measuring blood lipids in adults with dyslipidaemia taking berberine. The authors noted differences in trial quality and design.

Absorption

Reviews describe berberine's low oral bioavailability and the formulations studied to change it. Results for one form cannot be applied to another.

These points describe published research on berberine generally. They are not health claims and not claims about any product in this guide.

Safety

Safety points to check before you buy

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and under-18s

Do not take berberine if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and do not give it to children or under-18s. A laboratory study found that berberine can displace bilirubin from albumin, a concern for newborns. Two of the 6 product pages we read give no pregnancy warning.

Medicines

In a small study in healthy volunteers, repeated doses of berberine reduced the activity of liver enzymes (cytochromes P450) that break down many medicines. Berberine may also add to the effect of blood-sugar-lowering medicines. If you take any medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Health conditions

Speak to your doctor before taking berberine if you have diabetes, low blood pressure or a liver condition, take blood thinners, or are due to have surgery.

Digestive effects

Trials report digestive side effects such as constipation, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort. Keep to the directed dose and stop if you have side effects.

Do not combine several berberine products, or berberine with goldenseal, without advice. Stop and seek medical advice if you have side effects.

Buy with confidence

What to look for in a berberine supplement

01. Form and amount

Look for "berberine HCl" with the amount per capsule. For a phytosome, check how much berberine the stated weight contains.

02. Purity and source

Look for a purity or standardisation figure (often 97% or more) and the plant source, such as Berberis aristata root.

03. A certificate you can read

"Third-party tested" means little without a report showing the batch, heavy metals and berberine content, from an accredited lab.

04. Results that match the label

If a test result does not match what the label says, ask the brand to explain before buying.

05. Few fillers

Check the full ingredient list. Rice flour, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate are common.

06. Clear warnings

A responsible label covers pregnancy and breastfeeding, under-18s, medicines (especially for diabetes and blood pressure) and a daily maximum.

Before you buy

Label claims to treat with caution

Blood sugar and weight claims

No health claim is authorised for berberine in Great Britain, so statements that a product lowers blood sugar or helps weight loss are not authorised claims.

Comparisons with medicines

Food supplements may not claim to treat or replace a medicine. Be wary of pages that compare berberine with metformin or other drugs.

"Most absorbable" claims

Absorption claims for a branded form describe that ingredient's own studies, and do not tell you how much berberine is in the capsule.

Reviews and endorsements

Be wary of customer percentages and expert quotes without a full name and qualification.

Form, source and purityBerberis aristata root, wild-harvested in India; 40:1 ethanol extract standardised to 97% berberine HCl (stated)
Other ingredientsNone besides the HPMC capsule

Reasons to choose it

  • The most complete testing here: a finished-product report from an accredited lab for a named, recent batch, covering heavy metals and microbiology.
  • No added ingredients besides the capsule; source, extraction and standardisation stated.
  • Lowest cost per daily serving (£0.22).

Points to consider

  • No pregnancy, medication or age warning on the product page, which matters for berberine.
  • The published report has no berberine assay, so the 97% figure is stated by Sunday Natural.

Our verdict: The best-documented product here on testing and ingredients at the lowest price. Its warnings need to catch up.

Strengths

  • The most complete medication and pregnancy warnings here, naming diabetes and blood-pressure medicines.
  • A published third-party test page with heavy-metal results.
  • Low cost per day using the 180-day option (£0.45).

Considerations

  • The test page shows 593.52 mg berberine HCl per gram of capsule contents and 4 of 5 tests passed, which does not match a "filler-free" 500mg capsule.
  • Plant source and purity not stated; directions differ across the page.
  • Blood-sugar, weight and cholesterol statements, customer percentages and unnamed adviser quotes are not authorised claims (stated by Charava).

Our verdict: Good warnings and some published testing, but the potency result needs explaining before it can rank higher.

Frequently asked questions

Berberine: your questions answered

Berberine, safety and this guide

What is berberine?

Berberine is a bitter, yellow alkaloid found in the roots and bark of plants such as Indian barberry (Berberis aristata), goldenseal and Coptis. Most supplements use berberine hydrochloride (berberine HCl) extracted from barberry root. Some use a phytosome form, in which berberine is bound to phospholipids.

Does berberine have any approved health claims?

No. There is no authorised nutrition or health claim for berberine in Great Britain, so statements on product pages about blood sugar, weight, cholesterol, heart health or metabolism are not authorised claims. We make no claims about what any product does.

Who should not take berberine?

Do not take berberine if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and do not give it to children or under-18s. If you take any medicine, especially for diabetes, blood pressure, blood thinning or immunosuppression, or have low blood pressure or a liver condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Can berberine interact with medicines?

Yes, it can. In a small study in healthy volunteers, repeated doses of berberine reduced the activity of several liver enzymes (cytochromes P450) that break down many medicines. Berberine may also add to the effect of blood-sugar-lowering medicines. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking it alongside any medicine.

What is the difference between berberine HCl and berberine phytosome?

Berberine HCl is the salt form used in most published research. A phytosome binds berberine to phospholipids, intended to improve absorption, so 500mg of phytosome contains less than 500mg of berberine. Check how much berberine a phytosome product actually contains.

How did you choose and score the products?

We looked for berberine capsules sold to UK buyers and verified 6 products on live product pages on 5 November 2026. We scored each on seven fixed criteria weighted 90% on quality and labelling and 10% on price per daily serving. Anything a page did not disclose scored 0. We did not buy or test the products ourselves.

Do you earn money from this guide?

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. This doesn't affect how we rank products: every product is assessed with the same method. We scored every product with the same fixed criteria and weights, and we show every score.

Our recommendation

Check the warnings, then the testing and the ingredient list

Berberine has no authorised health claims in Great Britain and can interact with medicines. If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, under 18, take any medicine, or have diabetes, low blood pressure or a liver condition, speak to your doctor before taking it.

Sunday Natural Berberine 500mg Capsules has the highest score (82/100): it publishes an accredited, batch-specific test report, lists nothing but the extract and the capsule and costs the least per day, but its product page has almost no warnings. Charava Berberine 500mg is 13.6 points behind, with published heavy-metal results and detailed warnings, but a published potency result that does not match its label. Price per daily serving counts for 10% of the score.

How we compared

How we score products

We compared 6 berberine capsule products available to UK buyers, using each product page, its label information and any testing documents linked from the brand's site, read on 5 November 2026. Each product was scored 0 to 10 on seven criteria. The weights and point rules were fixed before scoring and are identical for every product. If a page does not disclose something, that item scores 0 and we say "not disclosed". Figures a brand states are credited the same way for every brand, and described as stated by the brand where we could not verify them.

  • Form, source and purity (20%). Berberine HCl (or the form used) named (2 points); plant source named for this product (2); purity or standardisation percentage stated (3); purity confirmed on a readable certificate (3; 0 if the certificate shows no assay or a figure that does not support the label).
  • Dose and label transparency (15%). Amount per capsule stated (3); clear daily directions (2); no conflicting figures, including between the page and a published test result (3); capsules and servings per pack stated (2, or 1 if only one is given).
  • Fillers and additives (20%). Starts at 10. We deduct 2 points for each bulking agent or filler, flow agent or lubricant, sweetener, preservative or colour, and 1 point for each emulsifier, flavouring, antioxidant, acidity regulator or processing aid. The capsule shell and the berberine ingredient (including a phytosome's phospholipids) are not deducted. Where a brand states there are no fillers and lists no other ingredient, we take that as stated. Minimum 0.
  • Testing and certificates (15%). A readable test report for the finished product (4; 2 if it covers only the raw ingredient); heavy-metal results on it (2); the lab's accreditation shown (2); results matched to stock on sale, such as a report for a named batch tested in the last 12 months (2). Statements such as "third-party tested" score 0.
  • Label and safety warnings (15%). Complete ingredient list (2, or 1 if partial); a pregnancy or breastfeeding warning (2); a medication caution (2); a specific caution for conditions such as diabetes, low blood pressure, liver conditions or surgery (2); an age statement (1); a do-not-exceed statement (1). Warnings on the page the buyer orders from count. A statement playing down risks loses 2 points.
  • Capsule, vegan and allergen clarity (5%). Capsule material named (4); vegan or vegetarian status stated (3); an allergen or gluten statement (3).
  • Price per daily serving (10%). 10 × (lowest price per daily serving ÷ this product's price per daily serving). Price is based on each brand's 3-pack price divided by 3 to give a single-pack price, then per daily serving; where no 3-pack is sold we use the single-pack price. We use the one-off price shown, not subscriptions, excluding delivery, from the page a UK buyer would order from. One serving is the smallest directed daily amount.

Relative scores (top product = 100). A product's relative score is its absolute score (weighted total out of 100) divided by the absolute score of the top product in this guide, multiplied by 100 and rounded to one decimal place. It shows how each product compares with the best one we assessed. It is not a percentage of our criteria met: the top product, Sunday Natural Berberine 500mg Capsules, scored 82/100 on our absolute criteria. The same calculation is applied to every product, so it does not change the order.

We also looked at other products. We left out one brand that publishes accredited batch reports because it delivers only within the EU, a product whose only certificate is a raw-material test from the manufacturer of its bulk powder rather than a test of the finished product, products that were out of stock or not yet available, products combining berberine with other actives (such as chromium or piperine) so the comparison is like for like, and marketplace listings whose sellers we could not verify. We included one product per brand. The ranking is an editorial judgement based on these scores. It is not a clinical comparison, an independent certification or a laboratory test, and we did not buy or test any product. Commission is explained in the note at the top of this page.
